Esperanza

An installation centered on the topic of immigration in 2019 in the US. Portray immigration as a naturally occurring process that should not be limited or restricted for anyone searching for a better life or an escape from danger— just like the Monarch butterfly migrates from Mexico to Canada every year.

Project Description

The installation consists of an enclosed space with a hallway entry made with black curtains and white in the PLAI lab. The purpose of having an enclosed space is to create an environment and narrow our audience’s focus on the message we are looking to deliver. The curtains will help us control the amount of potential distractions that an individual might otherwise experience. It will also help producers and developers on our team to have full control on what the user sees and hear, providing certain range of intended emotions. Within the space, the walls will be decorated with the shadows of origami butterflies. These decorations are meant to enhance the environment, we will be careful with not providing too much since our own decorations could also turn into distractions from our intended message. Although the purpose on-site pieces is to provide further enhancement to the overall experience, careful balance between technology and physical pieces will be important in order to not bombard the audience with sensory overload. Programmable LED lights will also be implemented, the lighting within the space should be something calming and soothing similar to the sound, so that in conjunction they build what we aim to be a liberating and calming environment.

This environment will only be perceivable if all assets line up with a common theme and message. Consistency in lighting, sound, and media content are crucial when providing a story that involves a complex topic. The narrative is as follows: briefly describe the state of US immigration under the Trump administration, contrast the current administration’s agenda by introducing immigration as a natural phenomenon and provide the information of resources people can use to make their mark if not in agreeance with what’s currently happening in the field.

Future Prospect of the Project

Esperanza was meant to shine a new light on a topic that is not often thought of as natural, beautiful and instinctive. We hope this new perspective continues to live on in people and that they spread their new view with others that don’t necessarily see it similarly.
